Baptism

Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation into the Church. In Baptism, we become special children of God. As Christians and children of God, we are called to live a new life, a life free of sins. We are called to live a life like that of Jesus. Jesus is loving, kind, and helpful, so must we also. Just like Jesus, we also forgive those who have hurt us and love even our enemies.

When we were baptized, our parents and godparents made promises for us. They, in our behalf, expressed our faith in God. They promised to do away with evil.

The many symbols and rituals during Baptism will make us fully understand and appreciate the importance of the Sacrament of Baptism.

Parts of Baptismal Rites

  1. The priest makes the Sign of the Cross on the forehead of the child. This means that he is welcoming the child into the Christian family.
  2. The priest pours water on the child's head saying "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The water poured into the head symbolizes the cleansing or removing of the original sin.
  3. The priest puts the holy oil on the forehead of the child. This symbolizes that the child is healed and strengthened.
  4. The priest puts on a white garment on the child. This symbolizes that the child is purified from original sin and receives a new life from Christ. 
  5. The priest holds a lighted candle. The parents and godparents of the child light their candles from this candle. This symbolizes our faith in Jesus Christ. We receive the light of Jesus.
  6. The priest and the parents of the child recite the Lord's Prayer. 
  7. The priest gives his final blessing to everyone. 

The Symbols Used in the Sacrament of Baptism

  1. The candle is the light of Christ
  2. The cross is the special sign welcoming the friends of Jesus
  3. The water cleanses us of our original sin.
  4. The holy oil heals and gives strength
  5. The white garment reminds us of our new life in Jesus.
