The Mysteries of Light

The Mysteries of Light is also known as the Luminous Mysteries. This mysteries is usually prayed every Thursday.

I. The Baptism in the Jordan

And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and a lighting on him; and a low voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Mathew 3:16-17)

According to St. Gregory Nazanianzus, "Christ is baptized; let us also go down with him, and rise with him. He comes to sanctify the Jordan for our sake and in readiness for us; he who is spirit and flesh comes to begin a new creation through the Spirit and water.

II. The Wedding Feast at Cana

On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples. When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, 'O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come', His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you'. (John 2:1-5)

According to Kathleen Coyle, "Mary's role at the wedding at Cana demonstrates that her relationship to Jesus is based on her faith in him, not merely on a biological relationship to him. Today she continues to intercede for us, to request the new wine of the Spirit of the Church."

III. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; and repent and believe in the gospel." ( Mark 1:15)

According to CCC 543, "Everyone is called to enter the kingdom. First announced to the children of Israel, this messianic kingdom is intended to accept men of all nations."

IV. The Transfiguration

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. (Matthew 17:1-2)

And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him." (Luke 9:35)

According to St. Anstasius of Sinai, "What greater happiness or higher honor could we have than to be with God, to be made like him and to live in his light?"

V. The Institution of the Eucharist as a Sacrament

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." (Matthew 26:26)

It was the Lord's will that his gifts should remain with us and that we who have been redeemed by his precious blood should constantly be sanctified according to the pattern of him own passion.

According to St. Gaudencius of Brescia, "Let us all, priests and people alike, be faithful to this everlasting memorial of our redemption. Daily it is before our eyes as a representation of the passion of Christ. We hold it in our hands, we receive it in our mouths, and we accept it in our hearts."
