Guide for Confession
- Examination of Conscience
In silence, try to remember all the wrong things you have done and all the sins you have committed. Recall the sins against the Ten Commandments. - Be sorry for your sins. Promise God you will avoid them in the future and you will do penance for your sins.
- Confession of sins.
The priest makes the Sign of the Cross saying: "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." And you will answer "Amen"
The priest will say: "May God, who has enlightened every heart, help you to know your sins and trust in His mercy." And you will say: "Father, forgive me for I have sinned. My last confession was __(date of your last confession)___ My sins are __(mention the sins you have commited)___ - The priest will then give some advice. After which he gives an act of penance. The penance can be a prayer or a good deed. You should recite the prayer given to you or do the good deed that you were asked to do for your penance.
After the penance is given, you pray the Act of Contrition. This is a prayer asking for God's forgiveness for the sins committed.
The Act of Contrition Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you;
And I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all, because I have offended You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.
Amen.
- The priest gives the absolution
The priest says: "God, the Father of Mercy, through the death and resurrection of His Son has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace. And I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." and you answer: "Amen". - Pray or do your penance
When you go out of the confessional box, go to your place and pray your penance.
